Cloisonné Enamelling Day (CA11X1YHa)
Achieve fabulous shapes, patterns and use a rainbow of colours to create your own enamelled pendant design.
Cloisonné enamelling is a fascinating process of adding fine wires to clear enamel flux, firing them into place before filling the cells with different coloured wet enamels.
Processes covered on the day:
- Clean and prepare metal ready for enamelling
- Demonstrate even application of enamel flux on a curved metal surface
- Identify and describe the three stages of enamel during firing.
- Identify when enamel has reached the correct firing stage.
- Design a suitable pattern for using fine cloisonné wires to fill with coloured enamels
- Apply the wires to your flux enamelled piece and fire in place
- Add wet coloured enamels into the cells to create your design
- Fire the enamel colours in several layers until the cells are at the desired height
- Sand down the excess wires and enamel
- Fire to create a smooth finish
- Demonstrate safe handling of enamel materials, kiln equipment and fired pieces.
- Clean the work area and equipment safely after the session
